Emergency aid for displaced persons
The fighting in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has triggered a humanitarian crisis. Violence is increasing and conditions for the civilian population are deteriorating rapidly. Looting and mass displacement are the reason why many people no longer have access to basic services.
Hundreds of thousands are on the run and seeking protection in neighbouring countries, including Burundi. One of the eight transit centres for refugees in Burundi is located a short distance from ACP Burundi's headquarters, where 6,000 Congolese refugees have arrived within a few days. The ACP Burundi team responded immediately and has already started visiting the refugees in the camp. The UN is responsible for providing food, sanitary facilities and accommodation. The Burundi team's contribution is to provide the migrants with practical and spiritual support. This includes hygiene articles for women, clothing repairs, haircuts, children's programmes, church services and evangelisation events.
ACP Burundi has been built up over the past four years and now has the necessary unity and structure - at its headquarters and throughout the country - to respond to the refugees' plight in a very timely and efficient manner. All members of the team are expected to contribute their gifts and strengths and participate in the care of the displaced people: Seamstresses as well as evangelists or people with experience in agriculture or working with children. Our aim is to bring people the Good News and thus hope, and to work towards preserving their human dignity. ACP has already sent tens of thousands of francs to Burundi to help realise this project.
