Regime Change Within Reach
The demonstrations in Iran are specifically directed against the leadership of the Islamic Republic. The population longs for freedom and is tired of religious extremism, political oppression, and mismanagement. The country is currently in a state of emergency. In order to control the situation, the government is responding to the protests with brutal force. According to human rights organizations, there have been over 2,000 deaths and thousands of arrests. The internet has been shut down and telephone lines are also blocked. Iranian exiles report that they have been unable to contact their relatives in their homeland for some time.
It is essential that the Iranian people be freed from their oppressors. Nevertheless, there is one major concern: if the regime falls and the isolation ends, a spiritual and political power vacuum will arise. Christians in particular must then be ready to take on responsibility quickly. In addition to Christians, other groups are also preparing themselves. For example, Jehovah's Witnesses have been learning the Farsi language for decades so that they can establish their church in Iran in the event of an overthrow.
The rejection of religion, and Islam in particular, is so strong among Iranians that many are willing to pursue alternative paths. On the positive side, Christians in the country are very well organized. Many households receive Christian satellite television. Over the years, Bibles have also been smuggled into the country, so that a considerable amount of Christian literature is now available.
If the Ayatollahs leave the country, the big question remains as to what will happen to the Revolutionary Guard and paramilitary groups when the power vacuum spreads. This development poses considerable dangers, as it is unclear who would take control. We have various contacts who are willing to take responsibility and protect the Christian minority in these uncertain times.
