A Growing Community of Disciples
After 25 years as a chauffeur, Pastor Paul* began a whole new chapter in his life by starting a church. More than 100 people now attend the services at his church in Mandalay, a region in central Myanmar—and this in an area where one has to think carefully about whom to tell about Jesus. “It takes time to get to know people before you talk to them about faith,” explains Pastor Paul. Anyone who decides to follow Jesus receives a Bible from Pastor Paul. During our visit, eight people were able to hold God's Word in their hands for the very first time.
His wife and three daughters are deeply committed to serving the church. Early one morning, we climbed a hill together. From there, we looked out over the city and prayed that many people would come to know Jesus. Afterward, we met several pastors from the network. We presented them with New Testaments in Burmese and English.
One of the church leaders is particularly delighted with the bilingual Bibles. With them, he can not only pass on God's Word to the children and youth but also teach them English at the same time. “This is very important for their future. But most families can't afford English lessons,” he explains.
We're also able to donate Bibles at the “Spring Lodge” guesthouse. Although the owner isn't a Christian, his wife is a member of our partner's church. Her wish is to place a Bible in every guest room—a courageous testimony in this predominantly Buddhist setting.
One of the pastors in the network is Sailas*. His vision is to establish a house church in every city. The 45-year-old is passionate about helping many more people come to know Jesus. We are also able to give him Bibles.
