Brutal Raids
In recent years, the violence has also spread to the center of the country, where Fulani attack Christian farmers and seize their land. The result: four million refugees, mainly Christians. After the Christian farmers have been driven out, the herds of Muslim shepherds soon graze on their abandoned fields.
No other country has recorded as many murdered Christians as Nigeria. Several thousand are killed every year. In a massacre in the Bokkos region during the Christmas holidays in 2023, at least 200 villagers fell victim to a wave of coordinated attacks. Over the Easter weekend this year, more than 40 Christians were murdered.
In June, 200 believers were killed in attacks in Benue State. These were Christians who had already been driven from their villages and were now killed in further attacks. The Nigerian government is repeatedly criticized for not having the situation under control and for allowing entire villages to be wiped out. Whether it is kidnapping, expulsion, rape, or forced conversion, the perpetrators of violence seem to have free rein and can do whatever they want. Even within the Nigerian military, radicalization can be observed. Jihadists have infiltrated the security forces through the back door.
ACP partner Pastor Dapar lives in a region where persecution is rife. There he serves the community and trains Christians. Many of them have a Muslim background. Because of his commitment, he receives threats and is exposed to attacks. Nevertheless, he remains in the area: -- As a pastor, I have a much greater influence when I am where there are many challenges. In the south, I would have a relaxed life and could build a house and a larger church. But that would not fulfill me, because God has called me here. --
