In mortal danger

PAKISTAN
With sad regularity, Pakistan makes the headlines for yet another bloody attack on Christians. The country is an Islamic republic in which Sharia law applies. The blasphemy law is frequently and arbitrarily applied.

To be imprisoned or become a victim of lynch law by an angry mob, simple allegations and accusations that the person has made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed or desecrated the Quran are enough. Evidence is not required. As a result, Christians are murdered or unjustly imprisoned for years without trial or judgement under terrible conditions. They are also rarely given the opportunity to be released on bail pending trial. If they are actually released from prison, they run the risk of being killed by Islamists.

In June of this year, videos circulated on the internet. They showed how a Christian's shoe factory was looted and set on fire by a mob. What was not shown: The owner had previously been beaten to death by Islamists for alleged blasphemy. The horrific events were triggered by loose sheets of the Quran that were found outside the house. Nobody knows who put them there.

The situation is particularly challenging for converts from Islam. They are thrown out of their families' homes or even murdered by them. Nevertheless, Muslims come to believe in Jesus. This often happens through healings. Muslims believe that ‘Isa’ heals and have Christians pray for them. If they are then supernaturally healed, many turn to Christ. Pakistanis also have the opportunity to hear about Jesus via social media. Faith is passed on - even at the risk of their lives.

We pray ...
for strength and endurance for the persecuted,
for special protection for converts,
for a revival in Pakistan.
